  • The Garden of Earthly Delights

Drawing inspiration from classical Rome, Greece and colonialism, Studio KM introduces the debut collection for FreeSpirit Fabric. The studio’s distinctive use of color and hand-drawn imagery make for a unique body of work soaked in narrative and detail. “The Garden of Earthly Delights” is a painting by Hieronymus Bosh, an Early Netherlandish painter, that sits in the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. Studio KM draws upon the beautiful colours in the painting as a one of the collection’s influences. Evolution is the key to this studio’s design approach. Studio KM choses a central them and adds images and drawings, finding new compositions through films, music and research. The process is decidedly hands-on and the designs change within this process of exploration. Studio KM is inspired by the kind of eclecticism that comes as a result of colonialism – the European approach of layering different eras, one on top of another, blending narratives to create a sense of time and place – a new visual language. Each name of the collection is designed to evoke imagery and feelings rather than to articulate an accurate historical documentation of one particular narrative. The palette for this collection is very optimistic – lots of bright colours – a reflection of the warmth and luminosity of the light in Southern Europe. There is theatre and drama in this collection, influenced by the baroque music that fills this London studio.
