Day Workshop. Skill level: All levels.
Kaffe will be taking you through the same process he uses for designing his own quilts, choosing colours that work together and getting you to move out of your colour comfort zone. You will be arranging your fabric pieces on a design flannel that you’ll just fold up at the end of each workshop, ready to take home and sew. You may keep your projects wall-sized or expand them to full size later. You will not be doing any sewing during the class.
This is a class learning about colour.
Seed Packet is a pattern from the new Kaffe Fassett book, Bold Blooms. It is a simple format of various size squares. Large scale floral and vegetable and fruit fabrics are fussy cut for each square. Choose your fabrics with a slight colour bias. This means that you should choose many, but not all, of them in one colour. The original is biased toward reds with either the backgrounds or flowers in red tones. The blossoms or fruit should fill out the large 8” squares and the small 4 ¼” squares that you will fussy cut.
This is a class suitable for all experience levels, from beginners to the truly competent!
You should know how to use a rotary cutter but we can give advice and help on the day.
Kaffe and Brandon have stressed that you should not pre-cut any pieces prior to the class. It’s much better to listen to their advice and then cut!

Note that Kaffe and Brandon recommend that you DO NOT cut your fabrics prior to the class. You will very likely change your mind about colours and designs during the class, so it could be wasteful if you have done so. Our past experience is that you often change your perceptions of what you want to put in your quilt, after having spent time working with Kaffe.
You’ll be trying out lots of different fabrics, learning about colour and what works with what.
No solid fabric or batik fabric should be used.
On the day you will be able to buy a whole range of fabrics. Kaffe will be able to assist you on picking out different colours to use for your quilt.
Our standard minimum cut of fabrics is 1/2m, however, for those attending Kaffe’s workshops, if you wish to purchase in 1/4m lengths, that is absolutely fine.
Please feel free to bring any fabrics that you would like to use in the class – these do not have to be Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics.
To complete the quilt you will be using at least 25 different fabrics – any amount of each fabric, from a 9” square to ½ yards of each.
Advice from Kaffe and Brandon
Some participants would prefer that we tell them beforehand exactly what fabrics to bring to class but the principle of the class is to inspire creativity and work instinctively. We don’t have a theory or work from a planned recipe. We all like different fabrics and colours for different reasons and so we should. Kaffe & Brandon want each participant to produce a colour scheme that is entirely personal to its creator, not recreating the quilt colour combination from the book.
The best suggestion we could give anybody is to bring a wide selection of large-scale prints in either a bright/light colourway or dark/richer colours. It can be in different colour families such as reds, pinks, oranges and yellows as long as they are equal in colour strength – either lighter or darker. Kaffe & Brandon love extremes, so very pale faded tones through to lively colour to extremes of dark tones are what we love to see in a class. We love people to use other fabrics than just ours in the class like Amy Butler and Anna Maria Horner and so on. It adds spice and variety, which we love. It’s much easier to have more fabrics to play with in the class to be able to eliminate.
Coffee and tea will be served from 9.30am onwards until the class commences. You will have an opportunity to look around our Warehouse and purchase fabric and supplies prior to the class, during and even afterwards.
Please note workshops do not include lunch. Bring a packed lunch with you or Tesco’s/ Subway is very near.
Workshops must be paid for in full at time of booking.
If you are unable to attend a workshop that you have booked, a refund will only be offered if 21 days’ notice is given prior to the event. Refund given will be the full amount less £5.00 administrative cost for each workshop cancelled.
We retain to the right to cancel a class if necessary. We will give you as much notice as possible should we need to cancel a class, and your full fee paid will be refunded.
