Tired of fine hand quilting but not comfortable with machine quilting? Then you are ready to try Big Stitch Quilting and its variations. These are quick ways to quilt your tops by hand using such stitches as Crows foot and Mennonite Tacks along with buttoning and tying.
On a pre-made top (pattern supplied) you will stitch all the different stitches and try your hand at Amish wave or elbow quilting. We will also look at how women in years past quilted quilts quickly with utility type quilting designs.
Technique: Hand work. Hand quilting
About Carolyn Forster
Carolyn Forster is a quilt designer, teacher and author from Tunbridge Wells in Kent. Since self-publishing her first book ‘Quilting on the Go’ in 2007, Carolyn has written ten more patchwork and quilting books with Search Press in the UK and Landauer Publishing in the USA. She has been a regular project contributor for magazines in the UK, including Today’s Quilter, as well as abroad.
Carolyn’s quilts are an eclectic mix of fabrics, a posh way to say she makes scrappy quilts, and they always have their roots from some point in the past, being inspired by quilt makers who have gone before us. Accessibility is Carolyn’s key philosophy with her teaching, demystifying techniques to allow every quilter to discover their own voice.
Please bring with you, or purchase on the day:-
Specs if required!
Basic Sewing Kit to include selection of needles, pins, small sharp scissors
A4 sheets template plastic or card (remember a glue stick), fine line permanent marker with which to draw on it
Ruler and pencils/chalk to draw on the fabric of the quilt
Threads:
Anchor Cotton A Broder no16
DMC Perle no8 (these also come in variegated colours!)
Linen threads, and anything you might want to experiment with.
Choose colours to contrast or blend, you might want one colour for the whole quilt, or experiment with different ones for each stitch.
Needles:
Clover Golden Eye Embroidery needles (no 3-9)
Clover Sashiko needles
John James Cotton Darners (size 1/5)
John James Chenille (size 18/24)
All of these are examples of the type of needle that is the most comfortable to use. Ultimately the needle you use will depend on a combination of the fabric, wadding and the thickness of thread that you choose, so have a selection available!
Thimbles
Hoop, if you use it
Rubber needle grabber, optional
Buttons:
A selection of sizes and colours, or all the same for uniformity, I use
about 20 for the strip on the quilt. Or you could just use 4, one on
each corner.
Felt:
Kunin or plain, to cut circles from for texture (think mattresses here)
Pinking shears to crinkle the edges
One pre sewn, layered and basted quilt top, or sample blocks on which to practise your stitches.
You could use strips from a ‘jelly roll’, or cut strips from the full width of the fabric you have in your stash to make a simple quilt top.
