Kaffe Fassett & Brandon Mably Colour Workshop

Kaffe Fassett & Brandon Mably Colour Workshop

This is a truly inspiring workshop looking at colour, print and scale and their impact on your quilt. This is a practical class with guidance. It is really fun!

Each participant follows the same quilt layout during the workshop, which Kaffe and Brandon will normally choose from their latest published book. The layout itself will not be announced until a few weeks prior to the workshop. This is to reduce “overthinking” that you may do prior to the class, allowing you to be spontaneous on the day with your colour choices. The quilt layout is simply the means through which you will learn about colour. Colour is the important learning experience.

All participants follow the same layout so that you can see how one set of colours compared to another in the same design can look completely different. This is part of the learning process from the class. The class critique is a very important part of the day.

During the class, you will be auditioning fabrics and cutting. There is no sewing.

The class begins with a short introduction from Kaffe and Brandon. They will help you with choosing your initial fabrics if required prior to the start. Following that, you will begin your “masterpiece”! Kaffe and Brandon walk around the class offering advice and suggestions throughout the day, grabbing bolts of fabrics from the shelves and showing one against the other.

You will follow the same process of choosing fabrics as Kaffe and Brandon do when they are designing, working on a design wall flannel. The design wall flannel is rolled up with your quilt, to take home at the end of the day. This can then be unrolled ready for when you start sewing at home.

If you are coming to the class with a friend, we will endeavour to place your stations near to each other. However, having your friend near to you may influence your colour choices, rather than allowing you uninterrupted free reign, and so we try not to have you next to each other. It is better to learn from Kaffe and Brandon rather than your friend’s opinions!

    Class Requirements:

You will need approx. 2m of Design Wall Flannel. Either bring your own, or pre-order for purchase on the day. 2metres is the optimal amount of fabric for your wall. More and it is difficult for you to reach. Less, and you are limiting yourself as to how much you will achieve during the class – if you only have a small amount of wall, then you can only learn about a small amount of colour and contrasts.

No fabrics are included in the course fee.

Bring as many fabrics for your quilt (within reason!) as you wish, or purchase on the day as required. Be prepared to change your mind several times as you receive feedback throughout the session. If you make no “mistakes” during the class then you are not learning.

Bring rotary cutting equipment, scissors, pen and paper.

Bring a copy of the book (or pre-order), once advised, to enable you to follow the layout.

Practise rotary cutting prior to the class so that you are up to speed at the onset. We run a refresher tutorial on the morning of the workshop just to remind you of the basics.

One day Workshop: 10am until 4pm.

Please bring a packed lunch with you. Tea, coffee and water are available throughout the day.

    Cancellation Policy

In exceptional circumstances, workshops and events may be cancelled. We reserve the right to cancel a workshop up to 48 hours prior to the workshop date.

We will give you as much notice as possible should we need to cancel and arrangements will be made. Where at all possible, in the first instance we will offer you an alternative date, securing your place in the class. However, should we need to cancel, and are not able to offer you an alternative, you will be refunded the full amount paid.

We are not able to recompense for any incremental costs that you may have incurred to attend a class should it be cancelled, such as purchases, travel arrangements or accommodation.

Should you need to cancel, please give us as much notice as possible. Providing at least 14days notice is given, we will offer you a refund less 10% administration fee, or you may transfer to another class. Unfortunately, if less than 14days notice is given, we are not able to offer any refund or transfer.
