Crazy Patchwork Bag Making Class with Anita Birtles
Learn how to make this colourful, practical patchwork bag while picking up a whole range of useful sewing techniques along the way.
This is a great class if you’d like to take your patchwork skills a step further and create something you’ll actually use. You’ll learn how to create the colourful crazy patchwork panels, add a zip, make and attach the sturdy straps, and finish your bag with beautiful meandering quilting using mesh.
During the day you’ll be guided through each stage, with plenty of tips and advice to help you get a professional-looking finish.
You’ll learn how to:
- Create a crazy patchwork panel using a selection of fabrics
- Quilt your patchwork using a meandering stitch with mesh
- Insert a zip neatly into your bag
- Make and attach the bag straps
- Put all the elements together to create a finished, fully lined bag
- Pick up useful tips for working with patchwork, quilting and zips
Whether you’re new to bag making or looking to add some new techniques to your sewing repertoire, this is a fun and rewarding project – and the finished bag makes a fantastic everyday shopper, project bag or weekend bag.
What to bring
Please bring the following with you, or purchase them from us on the day:
Rotary cutting equipment – board, cutter (with a new blade)
Ruler – two straight rulers (ideally one 24” in length and the other 12” in length)
Sewing machine in good working order and threaded, with a ¼” foot if you have one. If not, bring your usual presser foot and your sewing machine manual.
Paper scissors and a notebook
Requirements
Fabric
Selection of fat quarters or fabric scraps, or purchase one of our Scrap Bags on the day.
1/2 metre lining fabric
Long quilting pins
Size 80 sewing machine needles
Fabric marker pen or pencil
25inch zip
1/2 m cotton wadding
1/2m dress net of similar
A little reminder about your sewing machine
Please make sure you are familiar with your sewing machine and arrive with it threaded and ready to sew. This means we can spend less time setting up and more time actually making your quilt.
If you’re not completely confident with your machine, or would simply like a refresher before the class, why not book a one-to-one session with us beforehand? A little extra confidence can make all the difference and means you can relax and enjoy the workshop.
