‘We like to visit local museums when we’re away from home as they’re always full of the rich unique history of the place, we always learn a thing or two too and I inevitably come away with some fresh inspiration.
Last summer we found ourselves in Plymouth for the day and in their museum, we found hundreds of butterflies collected by George Carter Bignall (1826-1910) a well – known (in his day and in Plymouth still!) entomologist beautifully displayed and lit in huge glass cases.
The sheer variety of wing markings, shapes and colours were fascinating to me, and I spent a long time admiring and taking them all in. Naturally I started drawing and painting butterflies as soon as I was home and re-united with my paintbox and here are the results for you all to enjoy.
