Workshop Overview

This Endless Chain pattern originated in the 1930’s through the Laura Wheeler pattern company (appearing in the Cincinnati Enquirers, Aug 14th 1933). It is great for using up odd scraps and with a contrast background they are showcased here. This quilt is featured in Carolyn Forster’s book, 1930s Quilts, available here.

We will be machine stitching this quilt using the template shapes. In the class we will cover how to cut the shapes in multiples with the rotary cutter, sew the units and look at different layout options for the blocks.

Fabric Scraps:  

34 strips of fabric (2 1/2in x Width of Fabric) 

Neutral Cream/white: 2.7m

Requirements to  finish at home: 

Border/white: 1.55m

Backing:  4.5m 

Wadding:  86in x 86in 

Binding:  20in (55cm) 

Notions 

  • Sewing machine with 1/4in piecing foot 
  • Rotary cutting mat, cutter (24mm is useful for the shapes) and rulers (a large one for your mat to cut meterage, and 12 1/2in x 2 1/2in or similar is useful for cutting the shapes 
  • Propelling pencil to draw on fabric, optional  
  • A4 sheet template plastic, fine permanent marker pen, scissors 
  • Basic sewing kit 
  • Neutral cotton sewing thread for piecing

Carolyn Forster is a quilt designer, teacher, and author based in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Since self-publishing her first book, Quilting on the Go (2007), she has written ten more quilting books with Search Press (UK) and Landauer Publishing (USA), including Big Stitch Quilting.

A regular contributor to magazines such as Today’s Quilter and international quilting publications, Carolyn’s work celebrates scrappy, eclectic design. In rare cases, a workshop may be cancelled. Should this happen, we will:

  • Offer an alternative date (if available), or

  • Provide a full refund.
    Cancellations will be made no later than 48 hours before the workshop.
    Please note we cannot reimburse travel, accommodation, or material costs.

If You Cancel:

  • 14 days’ notice or more: refund available (minus 10% admin fee) or transfer to another class.

  • Less than 14 days’ notice: refund or transfer not available.

We appreciate your understanding — early notice allows us to offer your place to another attendee.
