Description
Quilt-As-You-Go Envelope Quilting with Carolyn Forster
One day Workshop: 10.00am – 4.00pm
Skill level: All levels
Block size 6 1/4in finished.
Finished size: As large or small as you wish, depending on the number of blocks that you would like to make.
Join Carolyn Forster for a creative and relaxing session exploring the delightful technique of envelope quilting. This fun and versatile method enables you to create double-sided patches that are quilted before being stitched together, resulting in beautifully finished pieces with no need for separate backing or batting. Each patch can stand alone as a coaster or be joined with others to make charming placemats, lap quilts, or even a full-sized quilt. Once you’ve mastered the technique, you can make as many blocks as you like!
In this class, you’ll learn how to “stitch and stuff” each unit, quilt it, and then join your blocks to form a cohesive, textured design. You can work in as many or as few colours as you like, giving you endless creative freedom. The technique is machine sewn, with the option to add either hand or machine quilting for a personalised touch. Finished pieces can be bound for extra stability or left unbound for a softer, more relaxed look.
Class Requirements:
Fabric Requirements:
For each block (or “pocket”), you will need:
-
4 x 5in squares of fabric
-
1 x 6¼in square of 100% cotton wadding
To complete a quilt measuring approximately 60in x 60in, you’ll need:
-
2 Layer Cakes (each containing 40 x 10in pre-cut squares), or
-
324 x 5in squares of fabric
The blocks can be made in any size, but Carolyn will be using pre-cuts in class for ease and a beautiful scrappy effect.
For the class, we suggest bringing either:
-
1 Layer Cake (40 x 10in squares), or
-
1 Charm Pack (40 x 5in squares)
Also bring at least 1 metre of 100% cotton wadding. Cotton wadding works best for this technique, though an 80/20 blend can also be used.
Because each patch is already enclosed, your finished quilt won’t require binding — though adding one can provide extra stability and a polished finish.

Sewing machine, foot and cable, and manual
-
¼in piecing foot and walking foot
-

Thicker thread for optional decorative joining of the blocks
-
Point Turner and Seam Creaser tool (or similar)

If you’re not yet confident with your machine or need a refresher, why not book a one-to-one session with us before your workshop? We’ll help you feel comfortable and confident, so you can focus on learning and enjoying your class.
