Description
Kaffe Fassett & Brandon Mably Colour Workshop
Our Kaffe Fassett & Brandon Mably Workshop is a truly inspiring workshop looking at colour, print, and scale and their impact on your quilt. This is a practical class with guidance. It is really fun!
Kaffe & Brandon use most of the class time to teach about the arrangement of fabrics, and to develop each participant’s colour palette to help you make your original pieces.
No sewing takes place during the class so no sewing machines are needed.
Click on the YouTube video below, to see the results of our latest workshop, where participants followed the Snowballs Quilt format.
Each participant follows the same quilt layout during the workshop, which Kaffe and Brandon will choose shortly before the Workshop Date. The quilt layout is simply the means through which you will learn about colour. Colour is the important learning experience. Participants follow the same layout so that you can see how one set of colours compared to another in the same design can look completely different. This is part of the learning process from the class. The class critique towards the end of the class is a very important part of the day.
The quilt layout that we will be following for this workshop is a variation of the “Seed Packet Quilt”. The original Seed Packet Quilt is sumptuously photographed in Bold Blooms (pages 68, 69, and 147). In addition, Kaffe, Brandon and Liza have recoloured Seed Packet twice more to feature fabrics available at the time.
This is a truly wonderful class and globally, Kaffe Fassett fans have enthusiastically embraced the Seed Packet Quilt format. It’s “sew” much fun to search out bold blooms from your stash and shop for the latest blooms and fruits. Designing and sewing a Seed Packet Quilt is like planting a garden: browsing the catalogues (stash & shopping), planning the lay out and planting the seeds (working with Kaffe and Brandon and cutting the squares) and watching it grow (sewing your squares,) and finally reaping what you have sown/sewn (wrapping yourself up in your new quilt.)
During the class, you will be auditioning fabrics and cutting. No sewing takes place during the workshop. No sewing machines needed.
The class begins with a short introduction from Kaffe and Brandon. They will help you with choosing your initial fabrics if required prior to the start. Following that, you will begin your “masterpiece”! Kaffe and Brandon walk around the class offering advice and suggestions throughout the day, grabbing bolts of fabrics from the shelves and showing one against the other. Music is played during the class. It’s a fun atmosphere!
You will follow the same process of choosing fabrics as Kaffe and Brandon do when they are designing, working on a design wall flannel. The design wall flannel is rolled up with your quilt, to take home at the end of the day. This can then be unrolled ready for when you start sewing at home.
If you are coming to the class with a friend, we will endeavour to place your stations near to each other if you wish. However, having your friend near to you may influence your colour choices, rather than allowing you uninterrupted free reign, and so it is not recommended. It is better to learn from Kaffe and Brandon rather than from your friend’s opinions!
Class Requirements:
You will need approx. 2m of Design Wall Flannel. Either bring your own, or pre-order for purchase on the day. Two metres of the flannel is the optimal amount of fabric for your wall. More, and it is difficult for you to reach; less, and you are limiting yourself as to how much you will achieve during the class – if you only have a small amount of wall, then you can only learn about a small amount of colour and contrasts.
No fabrics are included in the course fee.
Many of our participants find a reducing glass (available here) extremely useful during the class and also for working at home. The reducing glass works in the opposite way to a magnifying glass. It allows you to see your project from a distance rather than up close. This is extremely useful if you have limited space when working on your projects.
Bring as many fabrics for your quilt (within reason!) as you wish, or purchase on the day as required. Be prepared to change your mind several times as you receive feedback throughout the session. If you make no “mistakes” during the class then you are not learning.
Note that fabrics should be of patchwork weight (i.e. medium weight cotton). Very lightweight, such as cotton lawn or heavy weight fabrics are not suitable for this class.
We suggest that you do not bring any fabric that you have a particular emotional attachment to, as if the colours/ design do not work in your quilt, you may be offended if not used. :-)Â An open-minded approach in terms of design and colour is key for this class.
The workshop Seed Packet variation is composed of large and small squares. It features large scale floral and vegetable and fruit fabrics fussy cut for each square. The blossoms or fruit should fill out the large squares and small squares.
For the workshop you will need lots of fabulous fabrics so bring whatever you would like with you (subject to the advice above) but do not pre-cut anything before the class; wait until the class is underway before cutting.
Kaffe and Brandon can help you pick out suitable fabrics and may advise/encourage you to purchase more on the day to get your fabric selection just right.
Choose your fabrics with an eye for them to create a harmonious arrangement. They should go together well – perhaps most will have a similar background or same level of brightness.
You will need:
15-20 half meters of super large florals
15-20 half meters of medium/large florals
Please do not cut fabrics before class.
Please feel free to bring any fabrics you would like to use to the workshop – these do not have to be Kaffe Fassett fabrics. If you are not sure how you are going to proceed, that is okay. You can bring your stash favorites and be prepared to shop with Kaffe and Brandon during the workshop.
Bring rotary cutting equipment (board, cutter and ruler), scissors, pen and paper. You will find it helpful to use a rotating cutting board, although this is not essential.
Practise rotary cutting prior to the class so that you are up to speed at the onset. We run a “Hints and Tips Tutorial” on the morning of the workshop to remind you of rotary cutting basics, but you should know how to cut prior to the class. There is no additional charge for this tutorial, it is included in your workshop fee.
One day Workshop: 10am until 4pm, with an hour for lunch. Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to the start of the class to allow for set up and a prompt start.
Please bring a packed lunch with you. Tea, coffee and water are available throughout the day. Alternatively there is Greggs, Subway and Tesco’s close by. If the weather is nice then it a great idea to go for a walk along the river during your lunch break as this is close by too.

Hospitality warm and welcoming from the word go and nothing was too much effort, even when you were busy.”
