Description
Winter Hare Mini Quilt
Using Shadow Applique and Quilting with Julia Gahagan
Date & Time: 10.00am – 4.00pm
Skill Level: All levels
Join Julia Gahagan to learn the delightful technique of Shadow Applique combined with quilting. In this workshop, you’ll create a charming miniature quilt — a quick and easy project perfect for stitchers of all levels, including beginners.
You’ll start by making a small sample to practice the technique, then move on to complete your own Winter Hare mini quilt.
Finished Mini Quilt Size: Approximately 8″ x 10.75″ (20.5 x 27cm)
Class Requirements
Ultra-thin wadding and a sheer, transparent fabric are essential for the class. Both have been included in your class fee.
-
- Your sewing machine, attachments, and manual. Use either the standard sewing machine foot or an open toe appliqué foot. If you are competent at free motion quilting then bring along your specialist foot. You will not need your quilting foot. Make sure your sewing machine is working well and give it a clean and oil if you haven’t done so for a while. Put in a new needle size 70 or 80.
- Basic sewing equipment which should be scaled down in size to be comfortable enough to work with small pieces of fabric. This should include smaller pins (applique pins are very good as they have small glass heads), sharp scissors 4 – 6 “ (embroidery scissors are too small). Machine needles, scissors, pins, unpicker.
- A pair of tweezers are useful for some tiny pieces.
- Small cutting board, rotary cutter and ruler if you have these but they are not essential. These will be used to trim the edges of the project when quilted.
- Thread to match your fabric – White, light grey and dark grey cotton threads.
- Fabric glue pen – such as the Sewline Glue Pen. Please note that wet glue does not work well with the Shadow Applique technique.
- An erasable pen or pencil for marking fabric, such as the Sewline Marking Pencil
- Notebook and pen
Fabric Requirements
A piece of white fabric for the background (bring a fat quarter). This can be plain white or you could use a white fabric with a small pattern in the background.
A selection of grey and blue fabrics for a frosty winter scene, both patterned and plain. (ensure that any pattern fabrics are small scale). Your fabrics should co-ordinate with each other and you should have a mix of light, dark and medium colours. You do not need large quantities so we suggest squares and rectangles a least 8” wide. However, if you have co-ordinating fabrics in fat quarters then bring them along. These fabrics will be for the trees and shrubs in the winter scene. You will need a piece of plain grey fabric for the winter hare (6” square).
A small piece of red patterned fabric 4” square.
Julia Gahagan encourages participants to develop their own designs so if you have any other fabric you would like to include then bring that along. Fabric with animals, birds, houses and foliage (holly, mistletoe, leaves) can be cut out to add to your design.
Backing fabric at least 16” x 14” (a fat quarter will be fine as you are making a sample alongside your little quilt)
Binding fabric – We would suggest a grey fabric and you will need at least 12” x 8”
