This is little pouch makes a perfect gift and is great project for sewists of all levels of experience. It includes many of the basic techniques of patchwork: Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP), quilting, trimming & binding. The pouch has a simple zip setting and construction method, easy for everyone! Even if you have never tried FPP before, Helen will walk you through the process step-by-step.
Each student will receive a full set of instructions, with colour photographs and diagrams, so they can make more of these little pouches at home. The pattern includes FPP templates for all eight of the little motifs that appear in the middle of the chevron band.
This is a machine sewing workshop, and basic knowledge of rotary cutting is essential. Speedy or experienced sewists will complete one of these pouches during class, some students may need to finish off at home.
To complete the 20 x 20 inch panel as shown you will require the following fabric. If you wish to make a bigger panel/more blocks, allow extra fabric.
Fabrics:
For the main body and lining: Two fat quarters, ideally a contrast between the inside and outside – the second fabric can also be used as binding and zip tabs to add a highlight.
Braid/chevron panel: seven charm squares* which can either be in one colour palette or in a rainbow of colours. These will also be enough fabric to make the motif panel but make sure they contrast with your main body fabric.
* If you do not have pre-cut charm squares, you can always cut pieces from your stash. Just bring seven fabrics you want to use, or see what lovely things are available in the shop!
Other requirements:
Threads: For piecing – a good neutral cotton thread. For quilting – a nice colour, perhaps a variegated?
Zip: One nylon zip at least 14 inches long
Wadding: One piece 12 x 12 inches
Equipment:
Sewing Machine Nothing fancy required – with a regular foot for piecing and a walking or hopping foot for quilting (not a quarter-inch foot, if you are not sure, bring all the feet for your machine and we can choose on the day). Be sure to bring spare needles, bobbins, foot pedal, accessories and the manual too!
General Sewing Equipment Pins, scissors, soft pencil, small cutting mat (A4/A3) rotary cutter and a short quilters’ rule (12- or 12½-inch).
