When Should You Change Your Sewing Machine Needle?

A fresh needle is one of the simplest ways to keep your sewing machine running smoothly and your stitches looking their best.

How often should you change your needle?

As a general guide, we recommend changing your sewing machine needle every 8–10 hours of sewing. If you’re working on a large quilting project, you may want to change it more frequently.

You should also replace your needle:

  • At the start of a new project, particularly a quilt.
  • After hitting a pin – even if the needle looks fine, the tip may have been damaged or the needle may have bent slightly.
  • When changing fabric types, particularly when moving between lightweight and heavier fabrics.
  • If you notice skipped stitches or uneven stitching.
  • If your thread keeps breaking or the machine suddenly sounds different.
  • If the needle is bent, blunt or damaged – never continue sewing with a damaged needle.

Why is changing the needle important?

A needle becomes gradually blunt or slightly bent with use, even when there is no obvious sign of damage. A worn needle can cause poor stitch quality, skipped stitches, thread breakage and damage to your fabric.

Using the correct, sharp needle for your fabric also helps your machine sew more easily and reduces the risk of problems.

Choosing the right needle

Different fabrics and sewing techniques require different needles. For example:

  • Patchwork and quilting cotton: 75/11 or 80/12 Quilting or Universal needle
  • Machine quilting: 75/11 or 80/12 Quilting needle
  • Fine or densely woven fabrics: Microtex needle
  • Stretch and jersey fabrics: Jersey or Ballpoint needle
  • Heavier fabrics: A larger needle, such as 90/14, may be appropriate

Top tip: If you’re not sure when you last changed your needle, change it! A fresh needle is inexpensive and can make a surprising difference to your sewing.
