Highland Cow Appliqué Workshop with Anita Birtles
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make the Highland Cow appliqué panel, a beautiful design by Delphine Brooks. Anita will guide you through appliqué techniques, as well as tips on quilting. By the end of the day, you’ll be well on the way to a finished piece that can be turned into a cushion, framed picture, quilt, or used in many other creative ways.
This project is perfect for all skill levels—whether you’re a complete beginner or a more experienced sewer, you’ll leave with new confidence and practical skills.
Experiment with bold patterns, vibrant colours, or soft, subtle fabrics to make your Highland Cow uniquely yours. It’s a fun, hands-on workshop where you’ll enjoy bringing your creation to life with expert guidance.

Course outline
Learn the basic steps of appliqué and fabric placement. Each template is made up from sewing small strips of fabric together to create each template piece and arranged in such a way that you will make a unique work of art! Any fabrics will work from bright jazzy prints to subtle and pretty.
Class Requirements
Pattern and templates included in workshop fee.
- 1/2 metre of background fabric
- Your choice of fabrics for the appliqué. Be bright and bold with both pattern and colour, ideally 5 FQs or a 10 inch charm pack.
- At least 1m of Bond-a-web
- Pen/ pencil
- Scissors that you like for cutting fabric pieces
- Threads to match your fabric
- Notebook and pen/pencil
- Basic sewing equipment – scissors, pins, unpicker
- Rotary cutting equipment – board, cutter (with a new, and a spare blade), and ruler
- Fabric marking pen
- Sewing Machine
- Recommended – Fusible Pressing Mat such as Hemline Applique Mat, available here.
- Recommended – Applique Fusing Mat, such as Milward Applique Mat, available here.
- To complete you will need wadding, backing fabric and binding fabric to the size of your anticipated finished piece, plus 3inches all around.
🧵 Sewing Machine Reminder
To help you make the most of your workshop time, please ensure that you are familiar with your sewing machine and arrive with it threaded and ready to go. This will save valuable time at the start of the session and allow you to get stuck into sewing straight away!

Please remember to bring a packed lunch with you. A cool bag is recommended if needed.

You’ll have time to browse our Warehouse Shop before the class starts, during breaks, and even afterwards — the perfect chance to stock up on fabric, notions, and supplies for your next project.

Free parking is available at the warehouse.
Please park in the designated car park at the bottom of the building — this ensures clear access for disabled visitors and delivery vehicles. We kindly ask that you avoid parking along the length of the warehouse.

In exceptional circumstances, we may need to cancel a workshop or event. If this happens, we will:

Offer you an alternative date where possible, securing your place in the class

Provide as much notice as possible, with cancellations made no later than 48 hours before the scheduled workshop

If no alternative date is suitable, we will refund you in full
